Round 16 - Match Report - Onkas vs Southern Suburbs

Onkas Premiers Start Strong in a Tough Battle (17-28)

Onkas prems ran out for Caleb Whitton’s 100th game and welcomed back Shannon Lackner to the red and black.

Onkas started kicking south - The kick went high and Souths caught it and were tackled as soon as soon as they landed. After crashing up several times in the forwards, Souths passed to the backs, and an inside switch found a gap in the backline before the player was caught by Dilfy and Blake. Souths then kicked through and Shannon touched the ball down over the line for a goal-line drop out.

The drop-out fell to a Souths player who passed very wide and high to the wing, Souths then played back to the far wing but passed forward on their 5m line.

Onkas won their scrum and Shannon kicked out just before the halfway.  Souths won their lineout and went to the centres and then out wide. A loose pass pushed them back, but Onkas were penalised for being offside and Souths kicked deep. Blake caught the ball before it could go out and kicked back. The bounce went well for Onkas, bouncing back towards the chasers. Despite the Souths player appearing to shoulder charge Tom D as he went to pick up the ball, a scrum was given to Souths for a knock-on. From the scrum Souths tried to play wide, but the ball was intercepted by Caleb who was called for being offside. Souths kicked out on the 22m.

The lineout was overthrown and Onkas went wide but lost the ball in a tackle and Souths received a scrum. They tried to push wide but a poor pass landed at their player’s feet and was soccered out on the rebound by Tom D. Souths took the lineout and crashed up the centres, receive a penalty and took a quick tap. They pushed back to the far wing, but Onkas received a penalty for Souths not releasing. Shannon kicked deep and it went out on the 40m. Onkas mauled from the lineout but spilled the ball in the centres. Souths won their scrum despite a strong Onka drive and Onkas received a penalty for Souths not releasing. Shannon took the penalty kick from just inside the 40m for 3 points.

Onkas 3 – Souths 0

The kick off went high and was caught by Tommy. Souths caused a loose ball and found some space in the centres. Despite a loose pass, they recovered and managed to cross the line with a dive from the back of a ruck.

Onkas 3 – Souths 7

Onka’s kick went high and short and Souths knocked on in the next play. Onkas won their scrum and went on the attack with some big pick and drives and forward crashes. Shannon faked a pass open and then spun the ball blind to Tom Davies who cut through the line and scored under the post. Shannon converted.

Onkas 10 – Souths 7

 South’s kick was caught by Isaac who crashed through the line and, after the ruck, Shannon kicked high and deep. Souths returned the kick and Tom kicked back. Souths ran through their backs, finding some space in the centres but Onkas received the penalty at halfway. Tommy argued with the ref and was carded and the penalty was reversed. Souths miskicked and the ball trickled out at halfway off an Onkas player. Souths crashed up in the centres but lost the ball.

Onkas won their scrum and Shannon chipped over the top, but the ball just crossed the line on the full, coming back to halfway for a lineout. Souths pushed wide and Onkas defended solidly, forcing Souths back until they threw a forward pass on Onka’s attacking 40m. Onkas won their scrum and spun wide and received a penalty for South’s infringement at the ruck. Shannon kicked out on the 22m.

Onkas mauled from the lineout and received a penalty for Souths dragging it down. Shannon kicked out on the 5m. Onkas mauled again from a quick lineout and then passed to the backs. Caleb made a strong tun up the centres and Onkas crashed up through the forwards with Riley, Isaac and Marios hitting up. The ball was lost forward in a pass and Souths kicked long, with Onkas knocking on their defensive 40m. Souths flicked the ball back inside off the scrum and made a break but threw a forward pass inside the 22m. Onkas won their scrum and went wide before kicking. Souths counter attacked down the wing and lost the ball forward for an Onkas scrum. Onkas went wide from the scrum and then kicked. Souths were caught offside and Onkas received a penalty, kicking out just past halfway. Onkas mauled again, with a big drive pushing to the 22m and receiving a penalty. Shannon kicked out just before the 5m. Onkas tried to maul but the ball spilled loose and then was thrown to the backs, and Souths received a penalty for Onkas holding on to the ball. They kicked out on their attacking 40m. Onkas stole a scrappy lineout and kicked, with both teams kicking back and forth, until a penalty for Onkas that was then marched 10m. Shannon kicked out just inside the 22m. The lineout was an overthrow and knocked on. Despite a huge Onkas drive, Souths cleared their scrum and kicked out just outside the 22m. The ball was dropped at the lineout and stolen by Souths who received a penalty and kicked out at halfway. The throw was not straight, and Onkas tapped to Tommy and received an offside penalty. Shannon kicked out on the 22m. Onkas mauled and drove to the 5m but were held up. Onkas then attacked the line again but knocked on. A big scrum drive by Onkas crossed the line and Dilfy scored, with Shannon converting. Half time was called.

HALF TIME: Onkas 17 – Souths 7

The second half started with Souths kicking south. Onkas crashed it up and then kicked. Souths lost the ball forward in a tackle at halfway and Onkas forwards took several hits before the ball spun to Caleb who pushed to the 40m. Souths stole the ball and kicked. Blake recovered and passed to Tom. Onkas then attacked again and kicked. Souths went wide and Onkas received a penalty for not releasing. Shannon kicked out on the 22m. The lineout was knocked on and Souths kicked out from the scrum at their attacking 40m. Onkas mauled from the lineout, driving almost to halfway and crashing up in the forwards with pick and drives. Onkas then kicked and Souths kicked out just before halfway. Onkas mauled again but a loose pass put the backs under pressure and Souths received a penalty, taking a quick tap. They found space on the wing and crossed for a try.

Onkas 17 – Souths 14

Onkas kicked high and almost stole the ball, but Souths recovered and their backs pushed to within their 22m before getting a penalty for Onkas offside. They took a quick tap and pass but lost it forward. Onkas attacked from the scrum before kicking out on the 22m. Souths mauled from the lineout, driving to the 5m but losing the ball forward. Onkas lost the ball at the scrum and Souths tried to cross the line with a pick and drive, but Onkas defence held firm. Souths then found an overlap on the wing but dropped the ball as they tried to put it down. Play came back for a Souths penalty in front of posts at 5m. They took a quick tap and scored under the posts.

Onkas 17 - Souths 21

Onka’s kick was contested and knocked on by Souths. Onkas went to the centres from the scrum with Shannon taking it forward, then Tommy. Jack took the next hit and was shouldered to the head, with Souths receiving a yellow card and Onkas getting a penalty. Shannon kicked out just outside the 5m. Onkas mauled from the lineout but knocked on in the next hit up. A big scrum drive by Onkas put South under pressure and they kicked out inside the 22m. Onkas mauled again but knocked on. Onkas won the scrum and attacked, but Caleb was tipped in a tackle. Onkas continued the attack but knocked on. They won the scrum but were held up on the line. Shannon caught the ball and passed to Isaac who crashed up but Souths received a penalty at the ruck. They kicked out at halfway.

Souths went wide from the lineout and then back to the centres. Onkas defended well for several phases and Souths knocked on. Onkas went wide from the scrum and the back inside to Isaac who crashed through the pack. Marios did the same and Caleb also broke through. Onkas were looking dangerous, but Shannon was hit high with a shoulder to the face. There was no card given but Onkas received a penalty on the 22m. They kicked out at the 5m and mauled. The ball was knocked on and Onkas won the scrum attacking back inside through Caleb. Isaac crossed the line, but the ball was stripped and Onkas instead received a penalty on the 5m, choosing a scrum. The ball popped lose and Onkas recovered and crossed the line, but it was deemed a forward pass. Despite a strong Onka drive, Souths cleared their scrum and kicked out on the 40m. The ball bounced loose in the lineout and Onkas made a break on the wing but couldn’t make the final pass and it crossed the sideline at the attacking 40m. Souths cleared their lineout and kicked, getting a penalty for Onkas offside. They kicked out on the 22m and pushed wide finding some space in the backs to score.

Onkas 17 – South 28

Onkas kicked high and contested but the ball went forward off hands. Onkas received a penalty at the scrum and kicked out inside the 22m. Onkas crashed at the line multiple times and received a scrum for a Souths knock on. A loose pass put the Onka backs under pressure they were tackled out. Souths kicked deep from the scrum and Onkas spun wide to Brodie who was tackled high. Onkas then received a penalty on the other side of the field and kicked out on the 22m. They spun wide from the lineout, but Souths intercepted and counter attacked, knocking on at halfway. Onkas won their scrum and chipped, but Souths recovered the ball, giving away a penalty. Onkas took a quick tap and received another penalty, taking another quick tap. A dodgy tackle turned into a fight and Souths were marched 10m. Onkas tapped and Tommy went forward, receiving another penalty. Tommy took it again and Onkas crashed forward but were held up and full time was called.

Onka Women Miss Out By 3 Points in Muddy Battle (19-22)

Southern Suburbs started kicking south to Onkas. The ball bounced up to Jade W, who set the ruck. The ball spilled out and Souths knocked on. Onkas went backward in the scrum and Souths picked and ran, passing out to their backs. Onkas held them outside the 5m and Souths knocked on. Souths drove early in the scrum, but it was just reset. The next scrum was scrappy and Souths managed to steal the ball and crashed over for a try.

Onkas 0 – Souths 5

The kickoff was caught by Souths who took it forward, being brought down just before halfway. They picked and then pushed wide finding some space on the wing. Onkas forced Souths back to the centres and Leah P intercepted making a break from the 22m to halfway. Onkas pushed forward through Caity and Chelsea, but Souths were quick at the ruck, receiving a penalty for not releasing. The kick went out just before halfway and, the in the lineout, the Souths player collided with the ref, resulting in a scrum. This time Onkas got the drive, but Souths cleared and Grace drove them backward in a big tackle. Onkas held Souths back but gave away a penalty for not rolling away. Souths kicked out on the 40m and Onkas almost stole the lineout but knocked on. Souths went wide from the scrum and then lost it forward. Onkas received an offside penalty from a messy scrum and Ashley tapped, running up and passing to Grace. Jade P crashed back inside, and Ashley chipped over the top. Souths caught it, but Ashley stripped the ball and passed wide. Souths piled into a ruck and got a turnover, kicking to Leah P, who caught it and knocked down the first defender before passing to Jade W. Onka received a penalty for tackler not rolling and Ashley kicked out on the 5m. Onkas mauled from the line out driving almost to the line, receiving a penalty for Souths pulling the maul down. Onkas kicked out on the 5m again. Caity took the ball from the top of the lineout and passed to Danica who crashed it up, almost making it over. Onka received another penalty on the 5m and took a lineout. An overthrow bounced down to Chelsea and the ball was spun out to the backs before coming back for a knock on from Souths on the 5m. Onkas cleared the scrum and went wide, with Kate crossing for an equaliser.

Onkas 5 – Souths 5

The kickoff was caught by Cheyenne who took it forward and Onkas kicked a bouncer deep, catching the receiver on the 22m and forcing a knock on. Onkas gave away a free kick from the scrum and Souths tapped and went to the centres. A good tackle by Ashley knocked the ball free and Onkas received a scrum for the knock on. The ball came out the side of the scrum and Onkas cleaned it up but gave away a penalty for not releasing. Souths kicked out just after their attacking 40m. They made a few hits from the lineout and then managed to find a gap on the wing to score and convert.

Onkas 5 – Souths 12

The Onkas kickoff was caught by Souths and hit up in the centres. The Onkas defence held and Souths kicked but play came back for a Souths penalty. The kick went out on halfway and Onkas stole the lineout but knocked on. Souths made a break in the centres but were caught and forced out wide. Onkas forced a turnover and kicked but play came back for a Souths knock on at the 22m. Onkas kicked from the scrum, and it bounced out just before halfway. Souths cleared their lineout and tried a chip, but Jade P gathered and drew a scrum for Souths knock on. The kick from the scrum was smothered but Onkas regathered and Ashley made a run, followed by Grace and Kayla. The ball then went wide to Leah P and Ashley kicked, but the ball went out on the full and came back. Onkas stole the lineout and drove forward but came back for a scrum for a Souths knock on. Onkas went to the backs for a hit and then kicked long. Souths recovered and counter attacked but knocked on from a pass. Onkas went wide from the scrum and then crashed back up the centres. The ball then spun out to Jade P who drove up the field and received a penalty for South not rolling away. The kick went out just outside the 5m. The lineout was overthrown, but Grace caught it at the back and dived over for a try. Ashley converted and half time was called.

HALF TIME: ONKAS 12 – Souths 12

Onkas kicked south to start the second half. The kick was contested but Souths cleared and attacked. Play was then halted for an injury, before restarting with a Souths penalty. Souths took the tap and crashed forward with Onkas defending and getting a penalty for Souths not releasing. The kick was tapped back by Souths before it could go out, but it landed on another Souths player’s foot and bounced out on the 40m. From the lineout Onkas went to the centres and then out wide with Leah P making a huge break and getting to the 22m. Onkas then received a scrum for a Souths knock on in a ruck. The scrum was messy and resulted in an Onka penalty, which was kicked out on the 5m. Souths stole the lineout and kicked. Leah P caught the ball and took it forward, then spun it to the wing. Onkas attacked for several phases until Ashley found Jade P on a pass, which then went out to Leah P. Leah drew her player and the passed to Kate who scored on the wing. Jade P added the extra 2 points with a great kick from the wing.

Onkas 19 – Souths 12

South’s kick off bounced a few times before Cheyenne gathered it but slipped. South stole the ruck and went wide before being called back for a South’s penalty just outside the 22m. The kick went out just past the 22m and Souths won their lineout despite a misthrow. Onkas piled in but Souths cleared to the centres and then hammered at the Onkas defence before crossing the line near the wing.

Onkas 19 – Souths 17

Onkas kicked off and Souths ran it back, getting dragged down just past the 40m and then crashing in the centres. They pushed quickly to the wings before being stopped on the 22m. Souths continued to attack and managed to push over for a try at the side of the posts.

Onkas 19 – Souths 22

The kick off was caught by Souths, who attacked again but spilled the ball with a loose pass. Kate dived on the ball and stole it, but then Souths stole it back at the ruck. Onkas then stole it again at the next ruck and drew a penalty for Souths not releasing. The kick went out just before the 22m. Onkas were caught at the back of the lineout and Souths stole the ball, spinning it wide. Onkas defended well but gave away a penalty at the ruck. Souths tapped and ran breaking the line, but some solid defensive work by Onkas stopped them at the 22m. Jade P then stole the ball at a ruck and the ball was kicked deep. Souths recovered despite a contested ruck. Some great defence from Onkas forced a penalty on halfway and they kicked it out just before the 22m. Souths stole the lineout and attacked again, but Onkas managed a steal after a big solo drive by Souths. Onkas pushed to the wing and then back to centres with Grace crashing into the line, Onkas ran some more phases but then knocked on.  Souths went wide from the scrum and received a penalty for high tackle on the halfway. They took a tap and ran but Onkas defence held and received a penalty for not releasing. The kick was knocked on by South on Onkas attacking 40m and Onkas received a penalty at the scrum, tapping and going wide.  Onkas looked dangerous but were penalised for holding on and Souths kicked out on the 40m. The lineout went over the top and Onkas recovered a scrappy ball, going wide through Leah P then back to the centres with Danica and were given a scrum for South’s knock on. Onkas won a good scrum and passed out to Jade W on the wing and then Kayla. Souths stole the ball at the next ruck and kicked it. Onkas knocked on. Souths won their scrum and then kicked the ball out to end the game

Onkas Reserves Fight Hard Against Souths (10-57)

The Reserve Grade fought hard against a strong Southern Suburbs team, coming away two tries.

Onka Third Grade Too Strong For Souths (36-19)

Onka’s Third Grade came out with a point to prove at the tail end of the season and proved too strong for Souths, winning 36-19.

Tries to Nicholas O’Brien, Jake Grainger, Zakary Issom, Joel Maaka, Josh Evans and Noel Taylor.
